Surface Tension

Down my large coffee mug
dark as the horse’s eye

Children continued a round of Marco
Polo

One of those contests
with no obvious winners

They blindfolded the buoyant one
labeled It

If he peeked, none were the wiser—
Trust was required

I am the single witness—the drink was
stinging

In the Galaras steam
(I take it strong, no cream)

Marco he called
Polo replied, this repeated

Under whorls and spires I lifted
the cooling cup

I sipped
Marco! How close? He listened. No Answer

And again. Marco? He listened
No Polo

He tore off the blindfold
and faced the morning
