From a Journal

            after William Stafford

Fragments of eggshell like flecks of paint. Petrified
things, a lime, a starfish. Frayed shoelace, false start.
Thai curry.  Mischief in the margins.  Matchbook
from The Suisse Chalet, stolen weekend, bad sex.
Spilled coffee, slick roads. Codes. “I really do…”
means I’m on the next page. Gone. Below zero.
Two baby boys, an open diaper pin. No eggs,
then eggs, frozen breast milk. My husband’s
best friend. Taxi please. When’s the next plane
out of here.  Splattered rear view mirror, tentacles.
Ruptured eardrum, Vermont, matchbook
on the bedside table. Terrifying space
between stairs at the lighthouse.
