Fish in a Burning House

You walk down a familiar street but all the houses are derelict
The path to your door is overgrown with weeds
Your family is sitting on the veranda except your father who has died
His corpse is propped up in his chair in the living room
Everyone discusses what to do someone says to burn down the house
You set it on fire but it goes out; someone else sets it
You salvage the blankets putting them in a wheelbarrow
You realize that you have forgotten the fish
You put them in cookpots but the house is filling with  smoke
You dump the blankets in the yard and put the fish in the wheelbarrow
You dump the fish into the river and go back for the blankets

Larry Blazek was born in Northern Indiana, but he moved to the southern part because the climate is more suited to cycling and the land is cheap. He has been publishing the magazine-format collage Opossum Holler Tarot since 1983. He could use some submissions. He has been published in The Bat Shat, Vox Poetica, Leveler Poetry, Five Fishes, Front, and Mountain Focus Art among many others.
