Puddle Jumper

I'm used to loud, low-flying engine hums
but sometimes I notice trails in the clouds
and wonder why they start and stop.

I know you could answer all my questions about aviation
but your answers are always overarching, technical,
          experience clouded by time.

You had your pilot’s license years before taking me on The Barnstormer
when I screamed and you rolled your eyes
then we ran through the Florida rain to buy Mickey Mouse ponchos.

I think you told me once what causes turbulence
     (one letdown after another)
words you don’t remember, answers I couldn’t understand
it was all white knuckle white noise

what evaporates into the wild blue
